Title: What is this boat?
Post by: True blue on November 04, 2019, 09:34:46 PM
Hi all,

I came across this picture of a magazine cover from 1967 on the net. I recognise the boat in the middle as a Javelin, but i'm not sure about the other 2 boats in the photo. They look like Savage boats, but i'm not sure of the model. Does anyone out there know?

Julian

Hi Julian,
Some how I missed this post?? Sorry.
The top boat is a 15' Savage Pursuit with a 1966 110hp Merc
The bottom boat is a 14' Savage Viva with a 40hp Evinrude.

Conduct a "search" on this Forum for more on these two Hulls. There are quite a number of posts I've made over these years, about them.
The search button is at the top of the page, third from the left.

BTW, I reckon I still have that very same magazine somewhere??

Hi Guy,

you have a great deal of knowledge about these boats and the motors. It's all new to me, as i'm just learning more about Australian boats now after recently buying a Javelin.

Thanks for the advice about how to use the "search" button on this site.

P.S. If you still had that magazine, you would be really showing your age. Although, non of us a getting any younger  :)

Does anyone know what this boat is? From it's design and condition (as well as the trailer), it looks to be an old boat but I don't think I have seen this make of boat before.

Has the old style round blinker lights on the trailer.

Great to see the Savages on a cover
Anyone able to scan the article? Or sell the mag?

The clinker boat might be from the Steber range, they had round clinker styles early on

The 50hp Merc you have appears to have not to been molested. It is not a 1971 model, as those decals were the last of the red decals nor did that year have shock absorbers on the 50hp. The decals and other identifiers tell me it is a 1972 or 1973 model. There was no change between those two years of the 50hp. I raced a 1973 model 50hp Merc, back in the 70's.

As for the boat, either a Stebercraft or a Nipper (out of Taree) I reckon. That info' should give you a great start to your hunt on the web!

I'm not sure what this boat is either. Looks to have been a fast boat in it's day. A bit sad to see it in it's current condition.

Ok, I'm going to answer my own question here. Sometimes you just have to.  :D

I did a bit of digging and I believe that this boat is a Chris Craft, a XK-18 Jet to be exact. It looks like something out of the Top Gun movies series.

I found this boat on another Facebook page. Someone saw it at a property about a week ago and took a couple of photos and uploaded them. I have no idea what the boat is. The boat, trailer and motor all look very old.

MERCMAN, any idea what the motor is?

The boat looks like a Caribbean Belmont to me! See http://www.board.net.au/yabbse/index.php?topic=492.0

The motor on the Belmont in this thread is a 100hp Johnson.

Mercury sold their first 100hp motor in 1962.

OMC sold their first 100hp Johnson in 1966, known as the Golden Meteor. They were well know for drinking like a sailor on Shore Leave! (compared to their competition)
I suppose it didn't matter in those days, fuel and oil was almost free. I remember in the early 70's, petrol was only $0.10 per litre.

Thanks for the info MERCMAN.

It's good to see that there are stills boats out there like this one.

And $0.10 per litre for petrol. How times have changed.

I like the look of this little boat. It reminds me a bit of some of the classic American boats. Although this one could do with a pressure wash. Does anyone know what it could be?

Has a bit of a classic look to it.

I have no idea what this boat is, but it looks like a nice classic looking boat. It has a sticker, but I can't make the name out.

A nice looking classic speedboat. Looks a bit like a Pride Cheeta.

1. Orange half cabin appears to be a Pongrass Aquarius.
2. Is definitely a Pongrass 15' runabout.
3. Is defiantly a Swiftcraft Stiletto.

The Swiftcraft Stiletto along with the Haines V133 were both very popular hulls in the racing circles (mainly short circuit) during the very early 70's, just before the Dancraft and the Bullet brands were launched. These Steletto's and Haines were all (over) powered with 135hp Merc's an Johnrudes.

I'm so glad I took "Outboard powered racing boats in Australia" as an elective subject, when I was a schoolboy at 14 years of age!
If only I could make some cabbage out of the trivia in my head.
