Thanks Mercman,  much appreciated. Iíve cut the transom down to where I can just swing the clamps. Itís at about 17Ē so Iíll see how the engine goes at that and if it cavitates too much Iíll do what you said along with cutting the transom down more. The previous owner has made the transom out of 60 mm ply so it sure is strong and Iíve sealed the cut with two layers of glass. I tried to put photos up but only get them to the spot under here, but canít shift them up to the text.  Darryl
3  Vintage Australian Outboard Runabouts / Information Wanted / Banshee info wanted on: September 21, 2020, 03:10:01 PM
Hi guys, looking for transom height info for my Ď59 banshee.  Previous owner put in a new transom to suit an Etec which is way too high for my Ď62 Mercury 700.
Iím guessing the first cavitation fin just above the prop would have to be level with the bottom of the boat which gives me 16Ē of transom, but that doesnít leave enough room in the engine well to turn the clamp knobs.
Just looking for some advice please.    Cheers, Darryl.
4  Vintage Australian Outboard Runabouts / Information Wanted / Ď62 Merc 700 on: February 21, 2020, 04:25:59 PM
Hi all ,  Iím doing up a cloud white Mercury 70 hp to put on my Ď59 Banshee.  Iíve fully rebuilt the leg and water pump and rewired it. It is a low hour, fresh water only motor.
I need to paint it and have rubbed it back with wet and dry and will etch prime it.
What paint do I use ?
Is the motor wrap made of stainless steel ?
I have sent the wrap and brass prop to get polished and the bloke recons the wrap might not be S/S.
Thanks all. Darryl.

Thank you David, i recon i will strip it back with paint striper because im pretty lazy with preparation and stuff like that ( i actually work like a dog in real life).
I also dont plan on removing the power head but have pulled down the lower leg to replace all seals etc.
P.S. Did i actually call it a " Merk"

Hi all, yeah im new here. Ive got a very low hrs, fresh water only '62 Merk 700. It runs like a swiss watch after carb clean out etc.
I've decided to paint the "cloud white" exterior and buff up the shiny bits , so can i paint strip the alloy cowl and leg etc or do i just rub it back or even get it blasted ? I just havent done an outboard before.
While im at it, what paint do you guys recomend ?
             Cheers, Darryl.
