Not exactly correct Guy. The 3 cylinder and 2 cylinder 15 in short shaft OMC trunks have a different powerhead stud pattern, differ in length by about 10 mil and have a different exhaust housing. You can convert a Long Shaft 2 cylinder 55/60HP OMC to short shaft as all that is required is the short shaft mid section and gearbox. You can purchase these from the wreckers and are occasionally available on E-Bay or Gum tree.

1981 Johnson 70HP. I use to race the 75hp stingers. I have parts for these so let me know exactly what you want and I will see what I have. If you are after a complete fuel pump I have quite a few second hand and new service parts. Also have heaps of OMC 70hp stuff including midsections, blocks, heads, carbies, rods and pistons etc so if you are after any 70hp OMC stuff I should be able to help you out. You can contact ne by E-Mail sjmedaris@hotmail.com Guy Mainsbridge has my Mobile Number if you want to give me a ring to discuss.

Sorry to see that you had bad service with Hunts Marine. There are also other marine dealers in Sydney who maybe able to help. You could try Mobby Marine at Penshurst as they not only supply second hand parts for obsolete motors, they are also the distributers of after market Sierra parts. Do you have a part No. for what you are looking for?

Garyg. I was chasing that midsection, but the guy was not prepared to separate and ship to NSW unless I paid a lot extra $ so I dropped out of it. Glad you got the midsection as these are rare. Your midsection will fit any 3 cylinder OMC's being either the 847cc or the 920cc but you would need to change the adaptor plate to suite a 920cc and drill a hole in the exhaust housing and pivot tube to accommodate the manual shift rod. The 40hp gearbox is the next step as this is the nitro gear case used for the 3 cylinder OMC's. As far as I am aware the only difference is the drive shaft and the gears being a multi spline for the top of the drive shaft and 12:29 gears. The 75hp OMC's used the 15:28 ratio and a 4 course spline driveshaft. Although you have the 40 nitro gear case, if you can track down a 75hp short shaft nitro gear case with the 15:28 ratio would be better as these gears are only available from America at a price of $550 US for forward gear and pinion and $150 US for reverse gear plus shipping. The short shaft drive shafts are no longer available and very rare to find. Below the water pump on the 40 hp one that you have is identical to the short shaft 75 hp OMC stinger/hustlers. I have a guy on the Central Coast that can make a short shaft drive shaft from the lower unit of the 40hp and any solid 3/4in drive shaft which has the 4 spline. If you are chasing any parts just let me know as I should be able to help. Do you have a boat at the moment as if not your best bet would be to buy a complete boat and 847cc 3 cylinder OMC from Queensland. You should be able to pick one up complete for around the $3,000 mark. This would be the cheapest option. This boat is one that came out of the mould that was built by me. These boats are capable of around the 75mph mark with a stock OMC short shaft 75hp 847cc or around 80mph with a stock 920cc OMC. I still hold the 1250cc Mono record at 82.33 mph set in about 1994. If you are interested in a complete turn key unit I can put you in contact with the guy in Qld. What state are you from. Would like to hear from you in the future. You can contact me by E-Mail on sjmedaris@hotmail.com or by phone on 0414726995.

Garyg. Exactly what are you looking for to suite your engine as I may be able to help you out. Could you please advise on what motor the short shaft lower unit is required for. Parts of the 55hp 3 cylinder electric shift OMC can be used ie drive shaft, bearing carrier, gear case, but if you have a manual shift then the prop shaft, shift rod, shift rod cover, bearing housing and other parts would be required to come from a 1970 to 1980's 70hp 3 cylinder. The shift rod would need to be cut and re threaded as the 70hp OMC's were all long shafts. If your engine is a manual shift OMC 3 cylinder short shaft, then you may have the 75hp with the nitro gear case which is a smaller gear case than the 55hp and has a different gear ratio being 15:28 instead of the 12:27 as well as all internal parts being different. If you post a picture of your engine and your current lower unit then more accurate information can be provided and advice as to the best way to proceed.

9  Vintage Australian Outboard Runabouts / Buy Sell Vintage Boats Free Advertising, Outboards, Parts. / 60HP Johnson on: June 28, 2014, 06:58:48 PM
Have just acquired a 3 cylinder 60HP Short Shaft Johnson complete with Trim. Not sure of the year but would be Late 60's early 70's. It is the model that has a coil similar to a car coil. The power head is immaculate and I will be saving the short shaft Midsection and drive shaft for another project. Will be converting to Long Shaft and then selling. Would be ideal for any boat restoration project that requires an outboard motor suited to the date of the boat. Will post pictures later after conversion. If any one is interested just send me a PM.

10  Vintage Australian Outboard Runabouts / Wanted / Short Shaft OMC 3 Cylinder midsections on: June 14, 2014, 07:34:42 PM
Hi
I am after any OMC 3 cylinder Midsections to suit the OMC 3 cylinder 55hp, 60hp, 65hp and 75hp engines that were built from the late 60's through the 70's to the early 80's. If you have any or know where I may be able to locate any just let me know. Alternatively if you have a complete short shaft (15 in) engine for sale in these HP I may be interested in a complete engine.

Yes. Squeaky is one of my old racing mates. From memory most of the parts are the same as the mercury 3 cylinder 65 hp. Oil ratio is 18:1. If you have the  original gearbox beware as these are prone to gearbox blow out at 75 mph which is air arround the leading edge of the gearbox. The later model gearbox suits and does not blow out. The stators had a problem of the timming being advanced by 3 degrees on No. 3 so you would need to set the timming on No. 3 cylinder. As the motor has been sitting idle for sometime I would reccomend a strip down and rebuild. These motors were for sale through Western Marine at Blacktown NSW in 1976 for $1,550. Trim and propellers were extra. As stated earlier Geg Ellery may still have some 650XS or 650X parts as he was addicted to these engines. Great find. I use to race these in the 70's-80's. You can see what speeds these obtained in the thread race engines. I know a guy that knows everything about these and may have a few spares that you can buy off him or he may purchase your engine. He is at Budgewoi on the Central Coast NSW and is Greg Ellery. He runs a marine bussiness from there. I will chase up his contact and advise.
13  Vintage Australian Outboard Runabouts / Buy Sell Vintage Boats Free Advertising, Outboards, Parts. / Old Mercury Race propellers for sale on: January 16, 2014, 07:33:17 PM
I have 3 old Mercury race propellers for sale. One I think is a BP Mercury prop. It is 9 inch dia x 19 inch pitch with a 12 spline with a part number 48-61920 and is right handed. The other two were off a outboard hydro and measure 8 5/8 inch dia and pitch is unknown. These are right handed with a shaft size of 3/4 inch and a shear pin drive I have not priced these but am open to offers. Thee are located at Narara just north of Gosford.

Mercman. Ken told me that Guy Ma2936034681 was you. Ken has been in contact with me about chaseing up a 31M. Ive read a few posts and find them very intersting. Ive now retired and only work 3days a week and am currently going through some old racing boat articles. Once scanned I will try and post these and also on OZ Boats forum. Anyway bsck to the 650XS, at my first Australian Title withthe 650XS I did no 3 piston and blew the motor. Tracked it down to a faulty stator which advanced the timming on no 3 so replaced and timed on number 3. Also when I reached the 75mph had gearbox blow out which was solved with an updated gearbox. Greg Ellery also initially raced the 650XS and latter changed to a 700X. Greg held onto most of his XS and X motors and spares but were latter stolen. Next time I see Greg I will ask him. I saw on another forum that Greg was building an F3 boat for his daughter. The 12ft minx was quick with both the 650xs and the 55hp johono.and I can remember having some good duels in the 800cc class. I still have the 50hp short shaft manual with the dented cowling courtesy of close racing with John. Will definately catch up. My E-Mail adress is sjmedaris@hotmail.com

Hi mercman.Yes the 650xs were great in their day. I owned and raced one from 1976 to 1980 where Ilatter upgraded to the Evinrude FT 19S.I raced against your mates John and Ken and was very successrul at beating John.John never kiloed his 650xs and I held the NSW &AUST 1000cc & 1250 cc mono records from 1976 to date. The 1000cc mono records with the 650xs were 1976 to 1979 64.62,mph 67.09mph,71.43mph,75.84mph, 76.73mph, 78..01mph and for the 1250cc mono were 64.72 mph,66.83 mph,71.18 mph, 75.94mph, 76.5mph, 77.36mph.These were increased to 82.33mph and 81.03mph in 1980 using the FT19s.Some years latter the 650xs and FT19S were banned from racing in the stock motor class as they were considered to be a race engine. The 75hp Stingers became the motor to use. Early in the 1990s the OMC SST 60s became the motor to use and the 1250cc mono record was increases by me to 81.33mph. I would not be sure how many NSW and AUST titles John won from 1976 to 1979 but it could be some of those that I missed out on. From 1976 to 1980 the following NSW and AUST titles were won by me.1000cc mono NSW, 1976,1977,1978 1000ccmono AUST1978, 1979, 1250 cc mono NSW 1976, 1978 1250 cc mono AUST 1978,1979, 1980 1250 cc open hull NSW 1980. Thats for history of 650xs racing with Steves Jem.once I upgraded to the FT19s just about won every 1250 cc mono and open hull State and AUST title that I contested and stuffed the class as no one wanted to race against me.

Stephen
