Title: Oil Leak
Post by: senojn on October 22, 2021, 03:29:35 PM
Hi all .
One of my 70 hp Johnsons is showing greenish oil from weep holes .
As I only run the motors in fresh water tanks they are never in gear so there is no risk of damage .
Do I have to replace gear seals ?
Picture attached .
Thanks Neil

Hi Neil,
In two weeks time, I'll be catching up a good mate of mine who was a former OMC Bankstown employee... from their Racing Division! I'll show him the pics.

Perhaps Oldenrude or Mark S might "chime in" on this subject before hand?

MERCMAN.

Hi Neil,
This one almost "went to the keeper"... I spoke to my friend. He was in full agreement with my thoughts. The holes the residue is weeping from, are water gallery drains for the gearcase. If in the event of a winter freeze, these holes allow any puddling water remaining in the water pump housing are or water pick up area, to drain away so expanding Ice can't crack any part of the casting.

The weeping is most likely from rich exhaust residue accumulated in the mid section. I'm happy to chat to you about this further, if you wish?

MERCMAN.
